Susan M. Baer, the first person to run the three major airports New York metropolitan area to the New York port Authority and New Jersey and the first woman to be appointed its director of aviation, died Aug. 9 at his home in Upper Montclair, NJ She was 65.

A long-time official for the Port Authority, Ms. Baer was also the first woman to run the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects New York and New Jersey under the Hudson River
She ran airports successively :. Guardia 1994-1998, Newark Liberty International until 2007, and John F. Kennedy International until 2008.
To each she led modernization efforts, including significant investment by Delta and JetBlue, and advanced installation of NextGen satellite navigation technology to reduce flight delays and improve safety. (In Newark, she also oversaw Teterboro, a general aviation field in New Jersey.)
When she was appointed Director of Aviation of the agency in 2009, his responsibilities expanded to include International airport Atlantic City in New Jersey and Stewart International airport near Newburgh, NY, in the Hudson valley. She oversaw a staff of over 930 employees of the aviation department, an operating budget of $ 2.3 billion and $ 500 million in construction spending.
His career has touched on almost all forms of transportation, starting with the Panama Canal, where, after college, she worked for a non-governmental agency. Hired by the Port Authority in 1976 after the return of Panama, she immediately found that the reputation of the agency as a male bastion was justified.
"They wanted women who could type," she recalled, quoted in 2006 in Tom Murphy's book "Reclaiming the Sky :. 9/11 and Untold Story of the men and women who kept the 'flying America "" I convinced them that after traveling on my own by the south and Central America, I could take whatever they give me. She joined the Port Authority as a management analyst, working in tunnels, bridges and terminals departments before joining the air force in 1988.
Ms. Baer was on duty in Newark, in the morning of 11 September 2001, when two airliners commandeered by terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center. It had a view of the attack on the window of the fourth floor of the airport administration building. She immediately stopped all departures from Newark, 14 minutes before the Federal Aviation Administration closed the airports.
Susan May Baer was born in Allentown, Pa., On August 25, 1950, the daughter of Kurt Baer, a construction supervisor and the former Elizabeth Bader. She holds a BA in Urban Studies and Anthropology from Barnard College in 1972 and a master's degree in Commerce from the University of New York.
In addition to Mr. Martella, a police captain Port Administration retired, she is survived by their children, Nick, Jack and Lizzie; his sister, Sally Kuhn; and his brothers, John and Kurt.
When she retired in 2013 after 37 years at the Port Authority join Arup, a consulting company in engineering, such as planning the global leader in aviation, Ms. Baer acknowledged his role as a pioneer.
"I tried to do with it is to give opportunities to other women, and that is something all women should do," she told USA Today. "It was hard for us to get here, but we should be making it easier for people coming behind us."
